Some examples of Catles/Chateaus you may come across here.

Are you also a chateau lover? (like us) Then you've come to the right place. After all, the Allier is the department with the second most chateaus in the region. A large number of them are privately owned. Chateaus in our area that are open to the public are:

  • Château de Saint Aubin sur Loire in Saint Aubin sur Loire. In excellent condition (recently restored, inside and out) with beautiful gardens, park and interior (at 58 km)
  • Château Lapalisse (at 15 km) with beautiful woodwork and painted coffered ceilings (plafond à caissons)(since 1400 still in the hands of the original owners/family)
  • Château Drée in Curbigny. In beautiful condition (inside and out) with beautiful rose garden, park and interior, despite the distance (at 60 km) it is very worthwhile and can be well combined with Chateau La Clayette (exterior only) at 5 minutes distance.Château van La Clayette (alleen exterieur).
  • Château Busset (at 33 km) with a complete interior and beautiful garden.
  • Forteresse de Billy (at 35 km) real medieval fortress in a lovely village and here again.

Chateau route (102 km total/ 2 hours and 10 min. of pure travel time)

Route for a wonderful drive through the country and for visiting just the chateau exteriors. You could start your route at the above mentioned chateau of Lapalisse (15 km)(which IS open to the public) and then drive on through the valley of the river Besbre, along the following chateaus:

Further away:

  • Château Avrilly (at 80 km) (Really beautiful, located further north, perhaps something on the way back?)
